Origins
Vladimir Strastrakaba (1852-1934), a Hungarian admirer of Lev Tolstoy’s thought, arrived in Monte Verità in 1906 but soon moved away to found the Pensione Mirtillo in the building that became the Hotel Ascona in 1938.
It is assumed that Strastrakaba, a family man with numerous offspring, was little attracted by the freedom that prevailed at the alternative theosophical commune in Monte Verità and moved away from it to open his own community, more in keeping with his own moral requirements. The Pension Mirtillo (Blueberry) served strictly vegetarian dishes and had a code of conduct consisting of 12 commandments that ended: ‘In the Mirtillo Family you must feel at home, at ease, satisfied, healthy and well (…)’.
